THE REACH OF A WOMAN – it goes beyond her

There is a beautiful example of how the courage of a woman reaching out can change not only her own life but the lives of people in her community too.

Mark 5:27 speaks of an unnamed woman who is unseen by society and yet became unforgettable in terms of her impact.

Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing.

She had been haemorrhaging for 12 years and had exhausted all her options. Now she lived on the margins, yet something in her refused to accept that her story was over. She dared to believe that even the hem of Jesus Christ’s cloak carried healing. Quietly, even fearfully, she bravely reached out.

What makes this moment extraordinary is not just the miracle that happened. It’s the mindset. She didn’t wait for permission. She didn’t wait to be chosen. She made a decision and moved forward in faith, even though her circumstances forbade her to come out of hiding.

Now check out Mark 6:56

Wherever he went, into villages, towns, or the country, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and begged him that they might touch just the end of his robe. And everyone who touched it was healed.

What began as a hidden act of tremulous trust became a movement of faith. Crowds gathered, pressing in, asking only to touch the hem of His garment, just as this unnamed woman had done. The act that seemed so small, personal and invisible to the crowd, became a pathway for many to be healed and set free. Her faith did more than heal her body; it multiplied into belief in people all around. Because she reached out, others realised they could reach out too.

This is leadership.

It’s not always loud. It’s not always recognised in the moment, but it’s deeply influential in the communities we live in.

There is a powerful truth here. Your courage creates permission. Your faith sets precedent. Your willingness to reach out, to step forward, especially when it’s uncomfortable or uncertain, opens doors and others follow.

You may not see the ripple effect of your decisions immediately. Neither did this woman. Yet Scripture shows the outcome. What one woman initiated in faith became something entire communities embraced. Villages were changed. Expectations were lifted. Hope spread.

As a result of that one woman’s decision to reach out and touch His cloak, everyone who touched Him was healed.

All of them.

That’s the power of influence anchored in faith.

So here are questions for all of us.

What are you reaching for?

Where are you being called to step forward, even if the path isn’t clear; even if your voice shakes?

Your yes may not just be about you. It may be the beginning of something far greater, something that empowers other to rise, believe and act.

Lord, enable us to be women who reach, whose faith is not only personal but catalytic. Help us to lead in such a way that because we dared, other discover they can dare too.
